About Us

Mission Statement

To serve the sworn officers of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and to protect those officers who have sacrificed themselves in the line of duty for our community.

Vision
April Five will assist officers after an injury in the line of duty.  We will facilitate the obtaining and sharing information regarding disability and workers’ compensation.  We strive to support sworn CMPD officers in need due to an injury through emotional, material and financial ways.  We will also simplify life for these officers through our volunteer work and support systems.

Heidi Crater is the Executive Director of April Five.  Her former husband, Kayvan Hazrati, a medically retired CMPD officer, was shot in the head while serving a warrant on April 5th, 2006.  Kayvan is no longer able to work due to his debilitating injury.  Heidi oversees the day-to-day operations of The April Five Organization.  She is a non-voting member of the board.  Heidi and Kayvan started the organization so others would not have to endure the heartache and struggles they have gone through.

April Five has no paid employees.  All money raised goes back to the officers we assist.  Heidi Crater, Kayvan Hazrati, the board of directors, and all volunteers are not compensated for their time or work.

The Board of Directors consists of:
Chair: Michael Hinson, RN; Vice-Chair: Michael Yacopino, Retired NYPD; Secretary: Jennifer Shelton; Treasurer: Christopher Green, CPA; Board Member: Morgan Fogarty, Anchor Fox News; Board Member: Russell Martin, CMPD Officer.
